First Visit FAQs

  • We can’t wait to welcome you! Your first visit will involve a thorough assessment of your dental needs, including x-rays and photos, and a detailed discussion about your treatment plan.

  • The free consultation at our beautiful, modern orthodontics practice here in Oahu involves taking diagnostic records such as x-rays and photos, which will allow Dr. Caswell to create your custom treatment plan. We allot a 1-hour window to accommodate this process.

  • It’s natural you’ll have plenty of questions when it comes to your orthodontic journey. During your first consultation, we encourage you to ask questions like:

    • Can my smile be addressed by orthodontics?

    • Is treatment needed now, or should I wait?

    • What treatments would be best?

    • Will I need to have any teeth removed before treatment?

    • What is the estimated treatment time?

    • What is the cost of this treatment?

    • What are the different options for payment?

    • Can I afford orthodontic treatment?

  • One of the biggest questions our patients have about orthodontic treatment is the cost. We will outline the exact treatment costs for you during your first visit, as well as our flexible payment plans available. This will give you a better understanding of your financial commitment.

If you have orthodontic insurance, please bring your insurance card to your first appointment. This will help us estimate the personal costs associated with your custom treatment. Whatever the case or the cost, we will help you find the best way to fit a straight smile into your budget.

  • If unforeseen events require you to cancel your appointment, we kindly request a 24-hour notice. Your slot is reserved especially for you and this notice helps us adjust our schedule.

Braces FAQs

  • Properly caring for your braces during treatment is essential for achieving the best smile outcomes! The team at Caswell Orthodontics has you covered with our top tips for brace care.

8 tips for proper brace care

Avoid chewy, sticky candy: Your brackets can get stuck to caramel, toffee, and gum and can come dislodged from your teeth. This can result in uncomfortable breakages, and can prolong your treatment time.

Cut hard food into bite-size pieces: Avoid biting directly into hard foods like apples, carrots, pizza, and crusty sandwiches. Cut them into small pieces instead and chew with your back teeth. Avoid chewing ice cubes - but you can still enjoy shaved ice of course!

Break those bad habits: If you’re a nail biter or like to chew on the end of a pencil, these habits can cause your appliance to break. It’s best to break those habits as soon as possible!

Carry a toothbrush out with you: It’s recommended that you brush your teeth after every meal or snack during treatment. As such, it’s helpful to take a toothbrush with you to work or school.

Use fluoride mouthwash: A daily mouthwash will keep your smile clean and help prevent plaque buildup around your brackets.

Floss at least once a day: It’s especially easy for food to get trapped between your teeth during treatment with braces. Flossing will help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which can prolong your treatment journey.

Brush gently around your brackets: Be careful not to smack your brackets with your toothbrush handle, as this could damage them. Brush in gentle circular motions around the brackets to clean them from every angle.

Contact us immediately about breakages: If you do experience a broken wire or bracket, please contact our team as soon as possible so we can schedule a repair appointment to get your treatment back on track.

  • With all the new terminology, starting treatment with braces can be a bit baffling. But the team at Caswell Orthodontics is here to make it easy for you. We’ve compiled a list of all the different parts of braces to help you understand how they work to shape your smile.

Archwires: Archwires are the thin metal wires that are shaped specifically to fit around the arch of your smile and slot into the brackets of your braces. This archwire will be shaped by Dr. Caswell to provide pressure that will guide the direction of tooth movement.

Brackets: Brackets are the small metal or ceramic appliances that are fixed to each of your teeth.

Elastics (ties): Elastics (also referred to as ties) are small rubber rings that secure your archwire to the brackets of your braces. These elastics can be customized in fun colors to show off your personality.

Hooks: Hooks are small attachments on the brackets used to secure your elastics.

Mouthguard: A mouthguard is a special tray that provides protection to your appliance and teeth while playing a sport.

Palatal expander: A palatal expander is used to create a wider space in your upper jaw. It is attached to the upper molars through bonding or by cemented bands.

Separator (spacer): Separators are tiny elastics that fit snugly between your teeth to help make space for bands to be placed around them later.

Wax: Dental wax will be given to you during treatment. It can be used to create a barrier when a bracket or wire causes irritation to your cheeks or lips.

  • We offer a range of orthodontic treatments including traditional metal braces, Clarity braces, and Invisalign® clear aligners.

  • Metal braces are the original orthodontic method. In fact, they are what most people think of when they picture orthodontic treatment. But braces have come a long way over the years, and our modern metal braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more efficient than ever.

Metal braces straighten your smile using a system of metal brackets affixed to your teeth, a thin metal archwire running through them, and small elastic bands to hold it all together. These elastics can be customized with fun colors, or clear for added discretion.

When you visit our practice for adjustment appointments, Dr. Caswell will create precise bends in your archwires. This will create gentle, targeted pressure that will guide your teeth into proper alignment over the course of treatment.

  • Clarity braces use the trusted techniques of traditional metal braces in a new, discreet package. Instead of metal, the brackets of Clarity braces are made from clear ceramic. This ceramic helps your treatment to blend in with the natural color of your smile.

Clarity braces are incredibly sturdy and reliable, so you can enjoy your favorite sports during treatment. They're also designed for comfort and discretion with smooth rounded shapes and stain-resistant materials. Best yet? Clarity braces are great for any age.

  • If you want a virtually invisible treatment, you’re in luck! We offer Invisalign® treatment for children, teens, and adults at our practice. Invisalign® treatment uses a series of clear plastic aligners to move teeth into position - instead of metal brackets or wires.

These aligners look a bit like thin sports mouthguards, and they are custom-made for your exact smile. Besides being discreet, Invisalign® clear aligners are incredibly convenient. You can take them out for eating, brushing, and flossing - and can progress through treatment from home!

Retainers FAQs

  • After treatment with braces or Invisalign® aligners, your teeth will want to shift back to their original positions. A retainer will help to hold them in alignment so you can enjoy your stunning results for a lifetime. If you stop wearing your retainer, it will result in the need for further orthodontic treatment to realign your smile. We don’t want all your hard work during treatment to go to waste, so our team will give you detailed instructions for the proper care and use of your retainers.

  • At Caswell Orthodontics, we use two different types of retainers: removable retainers and fixed retainers.

Removable retainers: A removable retainer looks like an Invisalign® clear aligner. It is custom-made for your exact smile to hold your teeth in their newly aligned positions. You will need to wear your retainer both day and night to start, but you can switch to night-time only wear after a few months as advised.

Fixed retainers: A fixed retainer is a thin piece of wire which is permanently fitted to the back surface of your teeth, next to your tongue. You will need to take extra care when brushing your teeth to ensure no plaque builds up around this wire. Otherwise, it’s extremely simple to take care of.

  • Dr. Caswell and the team will discuss retainer care with you at length at the end of your treatment with us. To learn what to expect, or to refresh your memory, here are our top tips for caring for your removable retainers.

    • Wear your retainers exactly as instructed by Dr. Caswell to ensure lasting results.

    • Remove your retainers for eating and brushing. When you remove them, use your hands and not your tongue. Removing retainers with your tongue can damage them.

    • To clean your retainers, gently brush them with warm water. Toothpaste is not necessary as it can be abrasive and damaging. If you wish, there are commercial retainer cleansers that you can purchase.

    • Keep your retainers in their case when not being worn. Avoid wrapping them in napkins as this makes them very easy to throw away!

    • If you do throw your retainers out by accident (and can retrieve them) simply clean them with antibacterial soap and rinse them thoroughly.

    • Whatever you do, do NOT clean your retainers with boiling water. This will warp your retainers and render them useless. The same goes for leaving your retainers in a hot car or windowsill. Extreme heat of any kind can warp your retainers.

    • Keep your retainers away from pets, as they are likely to chew on things that smell like you.

    • Bring your retainers to every appointment, as they may require adjustment.

  • If your retainer is lost or damaged, please contact us immediately so we can make a replacement.

Orthodontic Technology FAQs

  • We use advanced technology such as the iTero 3D digital scanner to improve patient experience and treatment precision. This incredible hand-held scanner takes 1000s of highly detailed scans of your teeth and jaws within mere seconds.

Thanks to our iTero scanner, we fully do away with uncomfortable bite molds at our practice. The precise digital scans allow us to see what’s at work under the surface of your smile, so we can plan your orthodontic treatment with unparalleled accuracy.

  • If you decide to sign up for Invisalign® treatment with our team, we will use our iTero scanner to plan out your treatment. The scans we make will allow us to create fully-customized aligners to take you each step of the way through treatment.

Thanks to our incredible software, we can use the iTero scanner to show you what your smile will look like at the end of Invisalign® treatment - before we even begin!

  • Biolase dental lasers use innovative technology to replace traditional dental procedures, providing precise, minimally invasive, and patient-friendly treatments.

  • Our patients love Biolase laser treatment because it:

    • Is efficient and accurate

    • Is minimally invasive and more comfortable

    • Causes less damage to the gums, teeth, and other tissues

    • Prevents the need for stitches (in most cases)

    • Prevents the need for local anesthesia (in some cases)

    • Replaces drilling and incisions used in other methods

    • Allows for faster treatment and recovery times

    • Reduces bleeding and discomfort during treatment

    • Sterilizes your gums (which prevents bacterial infections)

    • Is quiet (unlike treatments that use drilling and vibration)

  • Dental lasers are extremely effective for reshaping gums, cauterizing treatment areas, or treating cold sore flare-ups. Our laser dental treatments are minimally invasive and very effective in soft tissue procedures, helping reduce swelling and improve your recovery time.

  • Dental laser treatment is virtually painless, with no pressure, vibration, or scalpels involved. To provide you with the most comfortable treatment possible, we may be able to numb your mouth with a local anesthetic - just ask! After the procedure, discomfort is usually minimal and can easily be treated by taking over-the-counter pain relief.

  • Yes, dental laser treatment is safe and has been used in dentistry since 1994. The Biolase diode lasers at Caswell Orthodontics use 98% less aerosols than traditional methods, making them extremely safe for both you and the environment.

Accelerated
Orthodontic Treatment

  • Your time is valuable. Our approach to straightening your teeth means your custom treatment plan will achieve the best possible end results in the shortest time possible. We do this through our range of accelerated treatment options.

It’s important to note that everyone’s treatment time will differ. Depending on the appliance you use, and the complexity of your orthodontic needs, there may not be a swift solution. That being said, we can certainly reduce the time you spend with your appliance thanks to technology.

  • Caswell Orthodontics offers two fast treatment options at our practice: Invisalign® Lite and Invisalign® Express.

Invisalign® Lite is used for treating issues pertaining only to the front six teeth. If you have minor concerns like crowded front teeth, Invisalign® Lite could help you achieve the look you want in six months or less.

Invisalign® Express is our fastest treatment option. It is meant for people with very minor misalignments in their front six teeth. With Invisalign® Express, results can be achieved in as little as three months.

  • Not everyone will qualify for the fast treatments from Invisalign®, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speed up your treatment! Even comprehensive treatments with braces or aligners can benefit from our acceleration appliance, the VPro5.

VPro5 is a hands-free device that uses gentle micro-vibrations to encourage your teeth to move more quickly. With just 20 minutes of daily use, this device has been proven to reduce your treatment time by up to 50%.

Because the device is hands-free, you won’t need to stop what you’re doing to use it. You can work, cook, do homework, or watch TV - all while speeding through treatment.
